Life

Tummy time.  Getting a lot done!

Ava participating in tummy time with Penn.

I think he looks so handsome in this outfit!

Blake following orders to read the book on the porch while Ava sits in her tot spot.

Reading on her own on the front porch - she loves the porch.

Yikes.

Close-up.

Playing on the floor.

On Friday morning Ava and I made a strata for a church function.  She did a great job cutting her mushroom and then her banana snack.

Penn's Sip & See

Here are some pictures from Penn's sip and see, which was two weeks ago tomorrow.  Courtney took the great pictures, so I'm so thankful to her!  My friends really did a wonderful job and I was delighted.

The hostesses and me, and Penn with Cindy.

The cutest monogrammed shortalls!

More cute stuff...frog onesie and little shoes.

I love these people, all my sweet friends!

Penn and me, right before I felt the wet spot on the back of his cute smocked outfit!  Before the shower even started!

Fancy sign, huh?  The shower was at Shady Oaks Country Club.

Beautiful shot of the fruit.

Mmmm, petit fours from Bluebonnet Bakery.

A stealth picture of Penn - my friend Lauren took it when she and her husband Walt babysat one night.  I didn't realize it was him at first since I hadn't given her any pics of him.  I thought, that's a cute baby!  Did she leave the generic picture in the frame after it was bought?

The room.

My friends must know I love a monogram!  These are the favors Cindy made - anise almond biscotti dipped in chocolate, and how about those cute stickers?

A picture of the place settings.  It was a tea, so people got little sandwiches, fruit and petit fours and sat here!

Afterwards we couldn't stop talking about how freezing cold it was in the room, the strange music one waiter balked at when we asked for him to change it ("Barracuda" and MJ's "Beat It" - really?) and the other waiter who kept dimming and then brightening the lights about every four minutes.  It was a circus.

December 2008 in Review

Maybe I'm back! Or maybe I'm not, I guess we'll see. Here's a little of what happened in December.

Penn Blake Simonson, born December 26th at 11:04 am, 8 pounds 12 ounces and 22 inches long.

The requisite post-birth mother and baby shot.

Camera shy!

Big yawn.

The Simonsons.

Now I have one of each!

Catching up

It seems it has been a while.  Or maybe you had not noticed?!  Doubtful.  It seems my days are taken up with other things that preclude me from having extra time to write and keep our little blog updated.  So sorry - but here's a random assortment of pictures to explain what we have been up to.

Back to Iraq.  This was taken right before Blake left to go to the airport.

Just sitting on the porch waiting for the neighbors to come home.

Oh, room service!  I went with Blake to the Gaylord Texan for a night while he attended a work conference.  In the morning I decided to get breakfast brought to me and it was heaven.

This is called "swinging" and she is not allowed to swing here anymore.  This was the first and only time, and I snapped this picture very quickly on my iPhone - before anything bad happened.  It was after a bath, which would explain the nakedness.  She usually swings from bars at the playground, or from a closet bar, or she has tried on the edge of a table - whatever you have available, she'll try.  Nice form, don't you think?!

Mmm.  So, for Blake's first meal home we had barbecue, all the way from Memphis!  Our friends Walt and Lauren drove home to Memphis for a visit the weekend before Blake flew in, so I put in my order and they stopped at Corky's to get some ribs and pulled pork for us.  I also made sour cream and cheddar mashed potatoes and roasted green beans.

For dessert that night I made apple crisp, which might be Blake's favorite dessert.  This is notable because when we got married he did not like "fruit desserts."

Ava really likes the carousel at the mall.  Blake rode with her one day.

Here's Ava playing dress-up in her kitchen.

Just having a laugh with her adult friends.

Looking lovely and quite composed in her borrowed outfit at the Jewetts' house (she got chocolate milk all over her own outfit).  Pretty shoes, which she wore home.

Waiting in line the first day the Apple store opened in University Park Village.  Maybe you know how much my husband likes Apple?  Well, we got him a t-shirt.

Almost in!  We only waited about 45 minutes, which I didn't think was too bad, if you're going to do something like wait in line for a t-shirt in the first place.  Oh, and I did buy a cover for my iPhone, so I wasn't one of "those people" that just came for the shirt.

Checking out her lipstick job in the rearview mirror.

Ah - the day finally came to put the nursery together.  Here's the pile of stuff waiting to be unpacked.

We had to wait a week for the carpet to get here till we could put everything in.  Here's Blake cutting the carpet pad.

Ava and Blake having fun.

Smiling for the camera.

We rode the miniature choo-choo about 4 times in a week and a half.  Ava loves it!  Especially the popcorn at the station stop midway through the trip.

Okay, this was just a good day - the day my new vacuum came!  Can you see Ava's little painted toenails?!  So cute.

A familiar sight - Blake and his mistress, er, I mean his Mac.

Back to putting the nursery together - here's the rest of the stuff in the living room waiting to go in!

Got the carpet in, and the shades up.  Now we were trying to decide about furniture placement. I guess I will have to go take a picture of the finished room for you to see - but please give me a month or so.

God Help a Single Mother

I think the other day as I was disciplining Ava or maybe when I was suffering through some ailment for which, since I'm pregnant, I can't take anything sufficient, I muttered a short prayer that came out "God help a single mother."

Uh - what?  So unnecessarily dramatic.  It is more challenging to get through days with a 2-year old and - temporarily - without a husband around, but for the most part I feel things are going well.  Oh and I am 24 weeks pregnant too, but still, the worst part about Blake being in Iraq is that I just miss him!

This morning while I was at my doctor's office, we discussed my due date - December 25th.  I am sure it would not be a total disaster for this child to be born on Jesus's birthday, but it would be a small one since for the rest of my life I would have to juggle these two birthdays on one day.  And since I would really rather not anyway, I am considering a scheduled induction somewhere around the 20th.  I kind of abhor this trend of scheduling births, but in these circumstances I have it almost justified.

Ava spent a lovely morning at Courtney's house, then we took all the children to the mall to ride the carousel, play in the mall park, and eat lunch.

Blake spent a lovely morning in a Blackhawk, catching a ride from TND to the LSA at BIAP. He's coming home on Saturday!  For eight days!  His company is flying him home for a conference at the Gaylord Texan, so we are pretty happy about that.  He told me riding in the Blackhawk is safer and faster than the PSD, and also that it is one of the coolest things he has ever gotten to do.  On Friday he will get on a flight from Baghdad to Kuwait, Kuwait to Frankfurt, and then from Frankfurt to DFW.  Then home!  And tomorrow is his birthday, so wish him a happy birthday!

A Visit from Uncle Lincoln

A lot of strange things have happened since Blake went to Iraq, but among the most delightful of those unexpected events was a visit last week from my brother, Lincoln.  He just graduated with his MBA in May, and will start his first job with AstraZeneca around the first of August. So this was sort of a last hurrah.

Linc was infinitely helpful during his visit.  First he installed new curtain rods in Ava's room, then he moved an armoire.  After that he carried an etagere upstairs and assembled my new desk chair.  The last evening he took Ava for a ride on the miniature choo-choo train.  And the whole time he helped with Ava and took a lot of great pictures.

I'm not quite sure how Lincoln got this pose.  But she looks older than her two years to me.

Here's Lincoln and Ava on the train.  Besides getting some quality time together, I had the chance to cook a meal in peace - that night we ate pan-roasted chicken, smashed potatoes and peas, and peach crisp with homemade ice cream for dessert.

Getting a box of popcorn may be Ava's favorite activity during the train ride.  The entire ride is about 45 minutes long, and in the middle there is a stop at a little station where you can buy popcorn and drinks.

This is Ava and Linc lounging on my bed watching home movies on the computer.

Ava's old-time Hollywood starlet pose right before we left to go out for supper.  The first night of the visit we went to eat Mexican at La Familia.

Lincoln came bearing gifts - although not from him.  He brought a personalized apron for Ava from Lulu and KK.  She wore it one morning and helped me make lemon cornmeal-blueberry pancakes and bacon for breakfast.

A cute picture of Linc and Ava hanging out on Linc's bed (the sofa).

This started out as hand-washing, but somehow she ended up in the sink washing dishes instead.
